The state of Florida is located mostly on a peninsula at the southeastern tip of the United States. It lies between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean and the Straits of Florida and with 1,350 miles of coastline, it is the state with the longest coastline in the United States of America. Its culture, cuisine and architecture reflect the many influences that have shaped its identity over the years, including Native American, African American, Anglo-American and Hispanic. Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams are just two of the many writers who flourished here. Florida, nicknamed 'The Sunshine State', has made a name internationally for its tennis, golf, auto racing and water sports. Marco Island forms part of Florida and is a city on an island with the same name in the Gulf of Mexico. The hotels Marco Island offers are close to South Marco Beach and have magnificent views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Originally named San Marco Island, Marco Island is the largest barrier island within southwest Florida's Ten Thousand Islands. These islands, many of which are mangrove islets, form part of a chain of hundreds and not thousands as its name suggests. Most of the Ten Thousand Islands are only suitable for overnight stays, being too small for long terms vacations. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service recommend an overnight stay only for seasoned canoeists and sea kayakers who are able to deal with a wilderness area of wind, bad weather and lack of fresh water. The southern tip however, would afford a guest at the hotels Marco Island has listed, an opportunity for water sports and for snorkeling.

Consider a visit to the Everglades National Park as mandatory when visiting the Marco Islands. Only moments away from selected hotels Marco Island makes available, the park protects 25 percent of the original Everglades. Its popularity stems from the fact that it is the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. and is unique when compared to other national parks. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site and a Wetland of International Importance. The park was created to protect a fragile ecosystem, unlike other parks where a unique geographic feature is safeguarded. The wetland of the Everglades is created by a slow-moving river and the essence of the park is an interconnected network of marshland and forest ecosystems, maintained by natural forces. Threatened species such as the Florida panther, the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee are found in the park. It is the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere and contains more than 350 bird species, 300 species of fresh and salt-water fish, 40 types of mammals and an array of reptiles. Explore the secrets of the mangroves and the wetland and book a trip at Captain Ron's "Awesome Everglades Adventures".

Guests at the hotels Marco Island supplies are only moments away from other attractions on the island. Tiger Tail Beach is less than a mile away and a drive of 30 miles will bring visitors to the Big Cypress National Preserve. The ocean is a major part of recreation on the island. Visitors can make use of Marco Island Fishing - Sunshine Tours&Charters to book the trip of a lifetime. Deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, boating and water sports are all just a step away from the hotel. For those who prefer to shop in an outdoor setting like this, Marco Walk Plaza features unique shops, a movie theater and dining.

For the convenience of the traveler to the hotels Marco Island provides, it is helpful that Marco Island Airport is less than five miles from a hotel, Everglades Airport is less than 40 minutes' drive and Southwest Florida International Airport is 46 miles away. Many hotels have private docks where guests can fish or tie up their boats. Guests can use the beach chairs and bicycles or go fishing and shelling. It is also often possible to watch dolphins and manatees playing in the water from the hotel's private dock.

Many others have apartments with cable TV and come with laundry facilities. You can buy snacks and drinks from vending machines, dine in a waterfront setting or have a barbecue on the terrace. When not fascinated by the beauty of the environment, guests can play tennis and table tennis or make use of the on-site game room.
